Who decides who gets heard

Burrn!, founded in September 1984, decided which Western acts broke in Japan and which domestic acts were taken seriously; it gave Seikima-II's debut zero points and later put Mary's Blood second in its best new artist poll. Young Guitar, from 1969, defined shred culture. Explosion Records documented the 1980s indie scene on the Heavy Metal Force compilations, and Nexus, King's metal imprint, carried the Kansai boom. Extasy and Free-Will built visual kei as a two label duopoly.

NAON no YAON is the longest running institution dedicated to women in Japanese rock and, within this dataset, the one the largest share of the women's scene bands passed through, and it is run by a band. Bright Star Records, a Spinning sublabel, was the indie home of Aldious and the boom. Victor signed Cyntia in 2013, Mari Hamada in 1983, and Liv Moon; King Records carries Mardelas, Saki's solo work and Trident's major debut; Epic Records Japan signed Hanabie. in June 2023 and the international breakout followed within a year.

JPU Records in London, founded 2012 with the GazettE's Division as its first release, is the principal export gateway within this dataset: Band-Maid, Lovebites, Nemophila, Mary's Blood, Aldious, PassCode, lynch. and Crystal Lake all reach Europe through it, and Metal Matsuri in 2019 was built on its roster. The Western labels now signing directly are one measure of the scene's current standing: Peaceville (Gallhammer, 2006), Napalm (Ryujin 2023, Lovebites 2026), Century Media (coldrain 2025), Metal Blade (Broken by the Scream 2026), Capitol (Babymetal 2025).

Loud Park, promoted by Creativeman, ran 2006 to 2017, returned in 2023 and 2025, and has no 2026 edition announced. The Wacken Metal Battle Japan qualifier is, within this dataset, the most consistent pipeline for unsigned bands into Europe, with two consecutive world champions. The pipeline continued in 2026 when Given By The Flames won the Japan final at Shibuya Cyclone on 12 April and placed third in the international final at Wacken on 31 July, showing that the mechanism remains active beyond the 2022 and 2023 victories [EBM] [WMB26] [DMH]. Meguro Rokumeikan, the Tokyo live house most closely identified with Japanese metal since 1980, closed on 19 January 2025 and is relocating.

The Nordic connection

Three Nordic institutions sit on this map, and each shows a different way the scene reaches the North. Gothenburg is a production route that turned into a touring one: Bridear recorded Born Again (2024) at Studio Fredman with Fredrik Nordström, the studio and producer behind the melodic death metal export of the 1990s, Nordström called the album one of the top five of his career in the announcement, and his own band Dream Evil then carried Bridear as support for five nights of its debut Australian tour that October and November, the opening leg of the tour Bridear billed as its first world tour and, after the European leg was canceled in February 2025, the only overseas leg it completed [DSM] [WSF] [BWB] [OZT] [HPR] [AVO]. That is the point where this map touches the Sweden lane of the Tampa Death Metal Family Tree, where At the Gates, In Flames and Dark Tranquillity are mapped around the same room; no other Japanese or Asian credit appears in Nordström's documented discography in the sources used. Helsinki is a production route of a different kind: Lovebites has sent every release to Finnvox Studios, mixed by Mikko Karmila and mastered by Mika Jussila, from the 2017 debut through Judgement Day (2023), so the band's Nordic connection is a mixing desk rather than a stage [WJD] [WFV]; its one Nordic date is Roskilde Festival on 4 July 2024, on the first world tour [AVL]. Stockholm is the record of the cost side. Lunar Fest, organized by Kizune Entertainment and the Swedish-Japanese Performers Association, announced a bill of four Japanese and five Swedish bands for 4 December 2026 at Slaktkyrkan, with Bridear and Broken by the Scream at the top [TKB]; on 6 September 2026 the organizers removed every Japanese act, citing funding they could not secure and ticket sales below projection, refunded tickets, and kept a smaller all Swedish edition, naming the Japanese collaboration as an aim for 2027 [SJP] [CHZ]. Within this dataset it is the clearest documented case of a Nordic promoter building a Japanese bill and being unable to carry it, and it is the reason the map records bookings and completed appearances separately.
