Downloads and data

The map, the reference pages, the PDF and the workbook are all generated from one data file, so the counts never disagree. Version 1.4.0, data version 2026.10.04, generated 2026-10-04, current through 24 September 2026.

PDFPDF referenceLetter size. The same text as the reference pages: reading the map, the lineages era by era, the female led scene, cities, institutions, network metrics, method, source register and index of nodes with the Japanese forms of names. ExcelNode and edge datasetRead me, Nodes (with Japanese name, person class, hub region, place year basis, confidence, sources and metrics), Edges, Personnel moves, Cities with formulas, source register and data dictionary. JSONdata.jsonThe single source: nodes, edges, sources, release and data version, cutoff, and the Japan outline used by the Cities view.

What is in the data

324 nodes of three kinds: bands, people and institutions (labels, festivals, magazines, venues, studios and agencies), each assigned to one of eleven lineages and, where a place is recorded, to one of ten hub cities or to a Japan, city not recorded, Outside Japan or Nordic countries cluster. 496 directed edges of twelve types: member of, founded, moved to, spawned, became, side project, produced, label or agency, festival or venue, collaboration, guest support and influenced. Every node carries a confidence grade (High, Medium or Low), source ids, a status as of the cutoff date, a place year with its basis, and computed metrics: degree, distinct neighbors, betweenness on the full graph and betweenness on the personnel only graph. People carry a relationship class: personnel connector, founding or core member, institutional connector or guest support performer. Nodes with a Japanese Wikipedia article carry the Japanese form of their name (nameJa, with other documented forms in jaAlt), from the article title and lead reading.

The source register holds 99 sources (1 artist statement, 7 database, 24 official, 3 official social, 50 press, 14 reference), cited by id beside claims in the reference, in the node entries and in the Sources column of the workbook. The rules for inclusion, timeline placement, hub regions and the people on the map are set out in Reading the map; the evidence standard and the open items are in Method.
